Royal Jet Selects CFM LEAP Engines for ACJ320neo Fleet
Abu Dhabi-based charter operator Royal Jet has confirmed its selection of CFM International’s LEAP engines to power its new Airbus ACJ320neo aircraft. The announcement was made at the Dubai Airshow on 19 November, marking a notable departure from the company’s traditional reliance on Boeing Business Jets (BBJs). Currently, Royal Jet operates a fleet comprising 10 BBJs alongside five Bombardier Global jets.
Strategic Shift to Airbus and Engine Choice
Earlier this year, Royal Jet placed its inaugural order for Airbus corporate jets, committing to three ACJ320neos with options for an additional six. Unlike the 737-based BBJ, which exclusively uses CFM’s LEAP-1B engines, the ACJ320neo offers operators a choice between the LEAP-1A and Pratt & Whitney’s PW1100G engines. Royal Jet’s decision to select the LEAP-1A highlights the engine’s strong market reputation for safety, reliability, and fuel efficiency. Mohammed Husain Ahmed, acting chief executive of Royal Jet, emphasized the company’s confidence in CFM International, stating, “CFM International and its Leap engines have built a solid reputation in the market for its safety, reliability and fuel efficiency.”
Industry Challenges and Market Implications
The choice comes amid ongoing challenges within the aerospace industry. Production of LEAP-1A engines has been disrupted by supply chain constraints and industrial actions, raising concerns about potential delivery delays. These issues have led industry analysts to closely monitor the performance and dependability of LEAP engines, especially as their adoption grows within the business aviation sector.
Royal Jet’s selection may also have broader competitive implications. Other charter operators might reconsider their engine preferences or reinforce existing supplier relationships in response to this development. The decision is poised to influence market perceptions of engine performance and reliability, as business aviation providers strive to balance operational efficiency with long-term dependability.
Founded in 2003, Royal Jet is recognized as the world’s largest operator of BBJs. Its expansion into Airbus corporate jets powered by CFM LEAP engines represents a strategic diversification, reflecting the company’s adaptation to evolving market dynamics and technological progress within the aviation sector.
