Cathie Wood Supports Joby Amid Sean Duffy’s Advanced Air Mobility Efforts

Cathie Wood Increases Stake in Joby Aviation Amid U.S. Advanced Air Mobility Push
Investor Cathie Wood’s ARK Invest has expanded its holdings in Joby Aviation Inc. by acquiring over 27,000 additional shares through its Autonomous Technology and Robotics ETF and Space and Defense Innovation ETF. This investment coincides with Joby’s recent announcement of a partnership with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), aligning closely with the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) broader initiative to promote electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft within the United States.
DOT Launches Ambitious Advanced Air Mobility Program
On Monday, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy introduced eight new projects under the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) pilot program, describing it as a transformative effort that will “radically change the way people and products move.” The program is designed to establish one of the world’s largest testing environments for next-generation aircraft, encompassing applications such as urban air taxis, regional travel, cargo logistics, and emergency medical services. Operations are scheduled to commence in ten states starting in the summer of 2026.
Joby Aviation, a prominent developer in the eVTOL sector, welcomed the announcement and underscored its ongoing collaboration with the FAA through multiple successful applications to the eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). CEO JoeBen Bevirt characterized the initiative as a “defining moment for American innovation,” reaffirming Joby’s dedication to ensuring that the future of flight is conceived, manufactured, and operated domestically.
Challenges and Competitive Dynamics in the Emerging Market
Despite the progress marked by the FAA’s pilot program, Joby and other participants in the advanced air mobility sector face significant challenges. Regulatory hurdles remain, particularly concerning aircraft certification and operational readiness. The competitive landscape is intensifying, with rivals such as Archer Aviation leveling accusations against Joby regarding undisclosed ties to China—claims that could affect Joby’s regulatory standing and public perception.
Cathie Wood’s continued investment signals strong confidence in Joby’s potential to lead the burgeoning eVTOL market. However, market responses have been mixed, reflecting a balance between optimism about the sector’s transformative potential and caution over unresolved regulatory and competitive risks. As the AAM pilot program advances, industry competitors are expected to escalate efforts to secure regulatory approvals and expand their market presence in this rapidly evolving field.
With the DOT’s pilot program set to launch in 2026, the coming years will be pivotal for Joby and its peers as they navigate regulatory scrutiny, address competitive pressures, and endeavor to realize the promise of next-generation air mobility.
