Air Transport Europe Orders Airbus H135 and H140 Helicopters

Air Transport Europe Expands Fleet with Airbus H135 and H140 Helicopters
Air Transport Europe (ATE), a prominent helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) operator based in Slovakia, has formalized an agreement with Airbus Helicopters to acquire one Airbus H135 and one Airbus H140 helicopter. Announced on March 11, 2026, this contract represents a strategic advancement in ATE’s mission to enhance emergency medical response capabilities across Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
Fleet Modernization to Elevate Emergency Medical Services
The integration of the H135 and H140 models will allow ATE to capitalize on cutting-edge helicopter technology, thereby improving operational efficiency and patient care in demanding environments. Both aircraft are distinguished by their superior performance, advanced safety features, and enhanced passenger comfort—critical attributes for HEMS missions.
The Airbus H135 is widely recognized as a leader in the HEMS sector, noted for its exceptional safety standards, compact design, and low noise emissions. Equipped with the Helionix digital avionics suite and a 4-axis autopilot, the H135 offers an optimal platform for both primary and secondary medical missions, ensuring precision and reliability.
The H140, Airbus Helicopters’ latest light twin-engine model, introduces several technological innovations, including a T-shaped tail boom, a five-blade bearingless main rotor, and powerful Safran engines. Its larger cabin, expansive windows, and optimized interior layout provide comfortable accommodation for up to six passengers. ATE plans to incorporate the H140 into its EMS operations by 2028, further enhancing its fleet capabilities.
Operational Challenges and Market Impact
The addition of these new helicopters presents both opportunities and challenges for ATE. The company must ensure the seamless integration of the H135 and H140 with its existing fleet, uphold rigorous safety and operational standards, and manage the complexities associated with delivery and ongoing maintenance. These efforts are essential to sustaining the high-quality service ATE delivers from its seven bases in Slovakia and two in the Czech Republic.
This procurement also carries broader implications for the helicopter manufacturing market. The acquisition is expected to intensify competition within the light-twin segment, potentially driving price adjustments and prompting product enhancements industry-wide. Competitors may respond by upgrading their own fleets or expanding their market presence to maintain or increase their share.
Leadership Insights
Milan Hoholik, CEO of Air Transport Europe, underscored the significance of technological advancement in their operations:
“Our priority has always been to provide the highest standard of emergency medical care, which requires a fleet that is both versatile and technologically advanced. By integrating the Helionix-equipped H135 and the H140 into our operations, we are embarking on a new level that will enhance our ability to reach patients in challenging environments and provide them with the best possible care.”
Thomas Hein, Head of Europe Region at Airbus Helicopters, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration:
“We are honored to welcome Air Transport Europe as a new Airbus H140 customer and are proud that they have placed their trust in our helicopters for their essential HEMS operations in Slovakia and Czech Republic. This partnership reflects our shared commitment to excellence in air rescue, and we look forward to seeing our H135 and H140 helicopters contributing to saving lives and supporting ATE's highly skilled crews in their daily missions.”
Future Outlook
With the planned introduction of the Airbus H140 in 2028, Air Transport Europe is set to reinforce its position as a leading emergency medical service provider in Central Europe. The company will continue to navigate the operational and market dynamics associated with fleet modernization, ensuring it remains at the forefront of air medical rescue.
