Two Dead After Cargo Plane Slides Off Hong Kong Runway Into Sea

Two Dead After Cargo Plane Skides Off Hong Kong Runway Into Sea
Early Monday morning, a cargo plane skidded off the north runway at Hong Kong International Airport, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. The aircraft struck a ground security vehicle before partially coming to rest in the sea adjacent to the runway. This serious incident prompted the temporary closure of the airport’s north runway and has initiated an official investigation.
Details of the Incident
The aircraft involved was Emirates flight EK9788, a Boeing 747 freighter operated by ACT Airlines, arriving from Dubai. At approximately 3:50 a.m., the plane veered off the runway during landing. Authorities reported that the aircraft collided with a security patrol vehicle, causing the vehicle to fall into the sea. The plane itself came to rest with its nose on land while the remainder extended into the waters off the runway.
Emergency responders acted promptly following the accident. Two men aboard the security vehicle were initially reported missing. Rescue divers recovered a 30-year-old man from the water, who was declared dead at the scene shortly before 6 a.m. The second man, aged 41, was transported to North Lantau Hospital but was pronounced dead soon after arrival. Remarkably, all four crew members aboard the cargo flight escaped without injury.
Response and Investigation
Authorities confirmed that weather and runway conditions were deemed safe at the time of the incident. The north runway was closed temporarily to facilitate rescue and recovery efforts and to ensure safety. Airport officials have engaged with the aircraft’s owner and operator as part of the ongoing investigation. The inquiry aims to determine the cause of the accident and to clarify whether the ground vehicle’s fall into the sea was a direct consequence of the plane’s runway excursion.
This incident has raised concerns regarding runway safety and ground operations at Hong Kong International Airport, one of the busiest airports globally. Further updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
